answer

The aorto-mitral
continuity of a human
(A) vs ovine (B) vs
porcine (C) heart.

This study of comparative mitral valve anatomy was conducted at IMMR’s in-house pathology laboratory.

As shown here, there is virtually no continuity in sheep and pigs, explaining some of the challenges associated with transcatheter aortic and mitral procedures in large animal models. Comparative anatomy is key to understanding which models are best, their potential limitations and how to leverage this information to provide compelling evidence of safety and efficacy of a novel device.
