To which species does this image of the mitral valve belong?
The mitral valve of canine species has fewer primary chordae than other species. As we have seen in the sheep, the aorto-mitral “curtain” is also practically absent. Due to size and other limitations, canines are generally a less relevant model than ovine and porcine and thus are used less frequently in cardiac valve research.
The colors are added to indicate the rough zone of the anterior leaflet (yellow) and the smooth zone of the anterior leaflet (green).
NCC: Noncoronary cusp.
LCC: Left coronary cusp.
ALPM: Anterolateral papillary muscle.
PMPM: Posteromedial papillary muscle.
Red double headed arrow: Aorto-mitral “curtain”.
