This sheep mandible shows a characteristic morphological feature of ruminant dental anatomy: The dental pad or browsing pad. It results from a lack of upper incisors and helps ruminants gather large quantities of grass. The wide gap that separates the dental pad from the premolars is called the diastema, as shown in this image.

Sheep mandibles are a relevant model for orthopedic research. Some examples include the evaluation of bone graft materials and fixation devices and their potential influence on healing.
